The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture (针灸) to perform operations for about4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves placing flexible needles into certain parts of the body. The needles are available in a number of stores in China and anyone may buy them. To learn how to use the needles takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to put in the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. A particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles.

Today, the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to develop a convincing theory to explain how the needles work in preventing pain, or why a needle in the wrist, for example, would prevent the pain in the area of the mouth.

A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation but the chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day.

How can we get rid of garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs?

These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the same time it can save the land to hold garbage.

For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped (倾倒) it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil (化石)fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.

Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants bum almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil. Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.

What two problems can man solve by burning garbage?

A.The shortage of energy and air pollution.

B.The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage.

C.Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuel.

D.Air pollution and the shortage of land to hold garbage.

17、 Which of the following is not the result of burning garbage?

A.The garbage burned is turned into fossil fuels.

B.The heat produced is used to boil water.

C.The steam produced is used to make electricity.

D.The steam produced is used to heat buildings.

18、 According to the passage which of the following is NOT true?

A.About 2 million rnetfic tons of garbage is burned in some power plants in Paris, France each year.

B.In a modem society, more and more garbage is produced each year.

C.Using garbage is a good way to solve the problem of energy shortage.

D.It will be too expensive to use garbage as an energy source.

19、 What is the author’s attitude?

  A.Delighted.

  B.Sad.

  C.Agreeing.

  D.Disagreeing.

20、 The best title for the passage may be__________.

  A.Garbage and the Earth

  B.Fossil Fuel and Garbage

  C.Land and Garbage

  D.Garbage Energy Source

No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 155 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or LeMonde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or cite news.

Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the "sensational", which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give in-formation, for they have to compete with television.

Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.

As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.

  A.Britain than in the USA

  B.France than in Britain

C.the USA than in Britain or France

D.France than in the USA or Britain

A.they have to keep up a good relation with them

B.they have to compete with television

C.they have to write about crime, sex and rumor

D.they have to give factual news in an interesting way

23、 Many American newspapers attract readers of different political tendency by_______

  C.avoiding carrying articles about extremists

D.printing articles representing different political viewpoints

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end—with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus win-dow. "Buy Super Clean Toothpaste. "" Drink Root Beer. " "Fill up with Pacific Gas. " Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now !

The beginning of the fide is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you' ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed--new houses, new buildings, sometimes even anew road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it' s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the fide can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the fight or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the fide. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you' ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the fide is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there' sa kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hour shave passed. By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests--even with your hands crossed behind your head, The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.
